Analyzing policy recommendations aimed at tackling governance, democratic values, and the shift to good governance model for economic prosperity. At the NWC we believe that democracy and land management cannot thrive where a governance system is weak, pastoralist voice is overlooked and civil society, and the justice system is weak.
Peace and Security
The ASALs of Kenya have in the past witnessed sporadic eruptions of ethnic and inter-clan conflicts, cattle raids etc. The primary drivers of conflicts in this part of Kenya are competition overland and political offices. This is exacerbated by the proliferation of illicit arms from conflict-prone neighboring countries.
Environment and Climate Change
Largely, the Arid and Semi-Arid land of Kenya, predominantly occupied by the pastoralist community has borne the impact of environmental degradation and climate change that threaten their lives and livelihood. The pastoralist communities in Kenya has been pushed out of their livestock production into displacement and destitution caused by unprecedented climatic crisis. Over the last decades, drought and floods have become more regular and severe in impacts.
